What is the best wide-angle Nikon digital SLR lens under $1,000?

I'm looking for a great lens and willing to pay the price (sort of). I really need to the widest angle of view, I don't want a 180˚ fish-eye, but close.

Digital SLR – Beginner/First Time User?

I am leaning towards the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, can someone please let me know if this is a good investment? I have read many reviews and comments on it but what do you guys think? What else would you recommend?

Is it true I can use my film lenses on a digital SLR?

I currently have a Pentax MZ 6 and am considering upgrading to a Pentax K100D but I just got new lenses. Can anyone clarify it for me and explain why if not. Thanks
