What has been your experience? Is the camera worth it? I'm seriously looking into purchasing this as I upgrade from film to digital and looking for any feedback. Thanks!
If you are planning on doing anything even remotely semi-pro look at the Canon 10d. It has more useful features, and is made from magnesium alloy instead of plastic like the Rebel. About 400-500 from eBay. 600 will get you one factory refurbished by canon with a 90 day warranty from adorama.com

A good resource to look at is http://www.dpreveiw.com
I have had one for exactly a year and I LOVE it! I kind of wish I had waited until October 2006 to buy it though, because the new Rebel XTi has a few extra features that I actually wanted in my camera (9 point auto focus, auto shutter cleaner, 10.1 MP… etc). It is the best investment I could have ever made and is very user friendly.
One word of advice: don't get the 18-55 kit lens. I did just b/c i couldn't afford another one at the time, but it really is a cheap lens. I ended up upgrading to a 28-135mm IS USM lens that is awesome. That lens will cost you about $500 but is well worth the investment. Most reviews of the 28-135 say it's the best everyday/travel camera b/c of it's good telephoto length and lightweight, plus it has the image stabilization.
For the best price on the camera, go to butterflyphoto.com. That's where I bought mine and saved a TON!!! Butterfly cuts the cost of the cameras and then tries to make it back in accesories, so don't get fooled into buying accesories through them. I did get the sales rep at Butterfly to give me a free battery with the purchase of insurance on my camera. I saved a bit there.
Go to BHphotovideo.com for your accessories. My accesories include the following:
Lowepro Nova 2 AW bag
2 GB Extreme III Sandisk CF card
lens cleaners
For your memory card, get atleast the 2 GB. If you are going to shoot in RAW format, it will take up a lot of space. The 2 GB card I have is super fast, so I do not have any lag time in taking pictures and have no problem achieving the max. burst that the camera is capable of.

The Canon 400D (Rebel XTi) is an excellent entry level digital SLR…which gets great reviews.
The kit lens is not the best though, so at some point in time you will need to buy a better lens or two or three………
A good lens is the EF 24-105mm f4 USM L IS, but it will cost more than the camera alone.

Adding on to Petra's list a bit, we've indexed about 80 reviews for the XTi (400D) over on our site … hopefully that should be more than enough information to help you make a decision:

(I shoot an XTi myself, and have been nothing but happy with it - the prints, when shot correctly and with a decent lens, are sharp enough that I can hang them on my walls as art)
