I don’t want to spend any more than $650 for it, and I don’t mind if it’s used. I just want something that takes good quality pictures, and for the colors to be really good.
Also I would like it to take video. so I was thinking about the d5000?

I really want to get into photography, but I want my first slr to last.

The D5000 would be a great choice and one that you would not have to worry about updating for a few years. It was only released this year, so will not be replaced for a while yet. The D5000 is very similar to the more expensive D90, has very similar image quality, but was made to a lower cost. It would be a great buy for a beginner. Here is a feature comparison guide for Nikon cameras.
