I am looking to start a higher level of photography and am looking to buy a digital slr camera to start what may turn into a lifelong hobby or career I have come across two that are in my price range and have appealed to me so far. They are obivously the Nikon D40 and the Eos digital rebel Xti. I have read reviews favoring both but so far Im leaning a little to the canon because of nikons auto focus disability, so to owners or critics which one do you consider the better camera, please list pros and cons
According to several sites I’ve visited the Nikon D40 has been discontinued. You can still buy a new one at B&H. The D40 was introduced in 2006 so its dated technology compared to the Canon XTi which is also a discontinued camera, having been replaced with the XSi.

Either camera would serve your needs. Just handle both and decide which one feels best in your hands.
Just remember that lenses are investments. DSLR camera bodies aren’t.
I recommend newer Canon Rebel XS
For perfect photos, fast and simple, there’s nothing better than Canon’s new EOS Rebel XS. With powerful features including a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, Canon’s DIGIC III processor, fast shooting and more, it’s a digital powerhouse. With simple, easy-to-use controls, a compact design, a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, and Live View Function, it’s a beginner’s dream come true.

Well if you consider the fact that the Nikon D40 uses the newest, high technology AF-S lenses (27 at present) and good used AF-S and AF-I lenses, there is not much in the way of auto-focus disabilty. All the new Nikon lenses being releases are AF-S lenses, so if nothing else, the number of lenses becoming available that the D40 can use is increasing.
The cool thing thing about the D40 is that is only one of two DSLR’s that can flash sync at speeds over 1/250th of a second … 1/4000th of a second so you can use a flash outdoors when shooting sports or portraits and fashion. The reason for this is that the CCD sensor can be used as a secondary shutter, something a CMOS sensor cannot do.
It is important that you hold both cameras in your hands and see how they fit YOU. Then you need to see which is the easiest for you to navigate through their menus. That is the camera system you will want to buy into.
When it comes to lens limitations, you need to know that if you do go pro, none of the Canon EF-S lenses can be used on any of the pro level Canon cameras. My guess is that those who pointed out the ‘limitation’ of the D40 did not mention this limitation of the Canon system.

Get the D40! and if you can, go to a camera store where the sales people are also photographers that can help you explain much more about the camera compared to walmart, best buy and the likes.
