I am looking to upgrade my digital point-and-shoot to a digital SLR. For the type of photography that I enjoy, reviews point me in the direction of the Nikon D60. ShopDigitalDirect has some great package deals but when it comes to lenses I am lost. What is the difference between a Nikon lense and a Nikkor lense? Is the Nikkor a cheap knockoff? Also, the deals on ShopDigitalDirect don’t look like they include a battery/charger. Does anyone know if this is the case?
First, let me tell you to NOT TRUST ShopDigitalDirect. They will not send all the pieces for the camera, they will sell you cameras that are not warranted, so if anything goes wrong, you are screwed. I have heard that they call you after you place the order and try to sell you overpriced accessories that are supposed to come with the camera. You will be much better off to shop a place like JR.com or even EBAY.
Nikkor lens are good in quality, not some cheap knockoff. In fact, I believe all of Nikon’s new lens are labeled Nikkor (check their website). Nikkor was originally meant for high end lenses, but I guess they are making the Nikkor brand name for all their lenses (maybe to stand apart from older Nikon lenses??). Nikon lenses are usually a bit more expensive then their competitive counterparts such as Sigma and Tamron, with little to no difference in quality.
They are the same: Nikkor is simply the name Nikon gives to their lenses

Let me second everything that was said above.
1. Run from shop digital direct. Before ordering from any online retailer check it out on resellerratings.com:
http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Shop_Digital_Direct
2. Nikkor is Nikon glass, it’s excellent quality, the name is just a brand name for Nikon lenses. The cheap knockoffs are Sigma, Tamron and not-so-cheap and a lot better, but still not to the par on quality are Tokina lenses. Yet I suggest Nikkor (or Nikon) glass for everything you can get it for.
Also try shopping for lenses with VR (vibration reduction) they’ll give you much more flexibility on low light conditions.
LEM.

get a d40 its better then the d60 even though the d60 has more megapixels, you will never need those unless your are printing billboards and the d40 is made for first time slr buyers (:and nikkor is just the name nikon gives to its lenses.
like the previous guy said dont trust that site! dont trust shopdigitaldirect they are a bait and switch company. they will try to sell you overpriced accessories after you call them to confirm your order and when you turn the accessories down they will say you item is out of stock or its the foreign model. always check the resellerrating.com reviews.
i got my d40 from us1photo.com with no problems. for 419. if you still want the d60 they have it available there for only 549.
good luck (:

Yes, what they’ve said is correct
Nikkor is what Nikon names their lenses.
It’s certainly no cheap third party vendor, nor a cheap knock-off, they’re very good lenses. I own a few of them myself, and they are very clear lenses. Nikkor is Nikon Brand. A Third party lens example is a Sigma brand product. Oh, if you’re buying the D60 brand new, it will come with a charger, and a battery- it has too, you buy them with the camera, in the box. Nikon includes those things.
If it doesn’t come with them, it means then that they opened the box, and took things out, and that’s something you wouldn’t want to buy. You’ll get a similar deal here, on http://www.amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-10-2MP-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B0012OGF6Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1224629292&sr=1-1
Don’t be persuaded my cheap combo deals, there’s always a catch
