Query regarding a Nikon lens?

Hi,

I’m relatively new in the world of Digital SLR photography. I’m looking for a Nikon D40 camera that is coming bundled with this “18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor LensEN-EL9″.

In one of the reviews I’ve read that this lens is having VR support. But there is no VR mentioned anywhere in the description of the product. Can someone tell me if this is the lens with VR (Vibration reduction) support?

Thanks,
Indian

The package you are looking at contains the older version that comes WITHOUT VR.

Nikon made two versions of the lens you mention:
The older version had no VR but the specs were almost the same and it reads:
"AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II"

The newer version does have VR and its description is:
"AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR"

You would be better off buying the body only and then choose the lens you like, those lenses are very cheap anyway.

Go to Nikon’s web site to find out official description of the lens.

Only the lenses that benefit from VR are produced. There is pressure from many fronts to eventually put VR on all lenses to make up for undeveloped cameras skills.

Yes, VR can be advantageous under certain conditions, but not mediatory. With the proper skills, you will not need the VR feature on any lens shorter than 200 mm.

Of the ten Nikon lenses I own and use, I have one VR lens, the 18-200 mm VR which I use when shooting editorial assignments were using a flash is not appropriate

I own a Nikon D40 with the kits lens 18-55 non VR and I love it, the lens is sharp, the controls are easy to understand and work and you get 300 plus pictures on a single battery charge and the pop up flash is very reliable, you can get VR on the 18-55 but unless your going to be shooting most of you pictures in very low light, this feature is worthless
